Overview
The Personalausweis is the German national identity card that includes an NFC chip used for electronic identification (eID). It allows users to securely verify their identity and sign documents digitally with services that support German eID authentication, such as Brevio’s signing platform.
Requirements
Before using Personalausweis for eID authentication, ensure the following:
Valid Personalausweis card
Your ID must be activated for electronic identification (eID) use. This is typically enabled when you receive your card.
NFC-enabled device
You can use either:A smartphone with NFC support
A computer with an external NFC reader
AusweisApp installed
The official AusweisApp is required to read your ID’s NFC chip.Download from: https://www.ausweisapp.bund.de/en/download

How to Use Personalausweis for Signing
Step 1: Choose Personalausweis at Sign-in
When signing or authenticating a document online, select Personalausweis as your identification method.
Step 2: Choose Device Option
You will be prompted to choose between:
“On this device” – if the AusweisApp is installed on the same device.
“On another device” – if you want to use your smartphone or tablet to complete the identification.
If you choose “On this device”, make sure AusweisApp is already installed and running.
Step 3: Connect Your ID Card
Hold your Personalausweis close to the NFC reader (or the back of your phone) when prompted.
Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your identity. You may be asked to enter your 6-digit PIN associated with your eID function.
Step 4: Complete the Process
Once authentication is successful, the system will automatically return you to the signing page to complete the document signing process.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
“The link does not work” message appears | The AusweisApp is not installed or not running | Install and open AusweisApp, then try again |
Unable to detect ID card | NFC not enabled or card not properly placed | Ensure NFC is turned on and place the card directly over the NFC antenna |
Authentication fails repeatedly | eID function not activated | Contact local authorities to reactivate eID on your card |
